Massive modification overhaul undertaken in late 1956 to convert the aircraft into a Flying Repair Station servicing TWAs airliner fleet on European sectors. Modifications were carried out at Orly Field, Paris, France which is the aircrafts home base. Upgrades included: - New Pratt and Whitney R-2800-CB4 radial engines / new propellers. - Installation of a 1,000lbst Fairchild J44-R jet-pak. - Fuel, electrical and emergency systems fully upgraded. - co*ckpit instrument panels upgraded. - Radio / nav. equipment upgraded to Lockheed Constellation standards. - Heating / ventilation systems totally reworked and upgraded. - Many minor upgrades around aircraft to lights and other fittings etc. - Equipment added (including an additional APU), for use as a Flying Repair Station, aircraft empty operating weight brought up 36,595 lbs. Weight and balance sheets are dated 1 January, 1960.

Notes: Fairchild C-82 Packet N9701F at Anchorage, Alaska in September 1979, still in TWA scheme from its days carrying spare engines for TWAs Constellations in Europe and North Africa. Now she was hauling fresh fish from Kenai and Kodiak. The jet pack on the roof was part of the Steward Davis Jet Packet 3400A modifications installed in 1963.

The accident occurred at the Karluk Airport (KYK) Karluk, AK, United States while on appoach. The damage was substantial. The pilot reported that during arrival, the approach to landing seemed normal until just before touchdown. The aircraft touched down short of the runway threshold marks on relatively steep terrain in the safety zone. The pilot estimated that the touchdown point was 1 to 2 feet below the runway elevation...

Involved in an incident.
The incident occurred at the Anchorage Airport (ANC) Anchorage, AK, United States while landing. The damage was minor. The main landing gear collapsed after landing. The nose gearwas down locked with a green light in the co*ckpit. There was no down locked light illuminated for the main gear. Examination revealed signatures consistent with extreme overload as in attempting to extend gear with the aircraft on the ground. The crew had to search for a checklist in the co*ckpit.
