What’s in this Grape Jelly Meatball Recipe

You only need 4 simple ingredients to make the best grape jelly sauce! The meatballs also come together with just a handful of delicious ingredients that you may already have on hand.

  • Grape Jelly: Any brand will get the job done, so just pick your favorite.
  • Sweet Red Chili Sauce: This is a sweet and savory condiment that adds a ton of flavor to the sauce.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: I love the savory flavor this creates in both the sauce and meatballs.
  • White Vinegar: Just a splash of vinegar helps balance everything out with a tangy flavor.
  • Ground Chuck: You can use ground beef if preferred.
  • Breadcrumbs: Use plain breadcrumbs, not Italian. Italian breadcrumbs will not compliment the sauce.
  • Milk: Whole milk is what I use! You can substitute it as needed.
  • Kosher Salt: A little goes a long way.
  • Black Pepper: Freshly ground black pepper yields the most flavor.
  • Garlic Powder: You can use granulated garlic instead if preferred.
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes: Add more or less to control the spice level.
  • Eggs: These will act as a binder for all of the meatball ingredients.

PRO TIP: Make the meatballs into similar sized balls so that they cook evenly, you can use a small ice cream scoop to do this if it’s easier.

Are grape jelly meatballs spicy?

Nope! However, you can make them spicy by adding more crushed red pepper flakes in the meatball mixture. Feel free to sprinkle some into the sauce as well to really crank up the heat. If that’s still not enough, consider mixing in some sriracha!

Why is grape jelly used in meatballs?

This combo may seem odd, but it’s the best! The grape jelly mixes together with sweet red chili sauce, worcestershire sauce and white vinegar to create a smooth sauce that’s both sweet and savory. It pairs perfectly with the meatballs.

Can I use frozen meatballs?

Yes! Just toss them into the slow cooker with the sauce, mix it all together, and cook as instructed until warmed through.

Why are my meatballs gummy?

This can happen when meatballs are too tightly packed. Avoid this by using a cookie scoop to form the meatballs, and try not to really pack the meat in there.

How to Store/Reheat

Once cooled to room temperature, you can store grape jelly meatballs in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or Crockpot until warmed through.

How to Freeze

Let the meatballs fully cool before transferring them to a freezer-safe container. Label, date, and freeze for up to 3 months.

Serving Suggestions

This is a great appetizer for the holidays and game day! I like to serve these meatballs with grape jelly on a large platter with a few forks and let everyone dig in! You can also serve each one on a co*cktail stick if you prefer.

If you like, you can turn them into a full meal by serving them with rice or on a bed of sautéed vegetables.

FAQs

Why are my grape jelly meatballs runny? ›

To thicken runny grape jelly meatball sauce, mix up a teaspoon of cornstarch (or even two depending on how thick you want things) with an equal amount of water. Stir this into the bubbling meatball mixture during the last hour they're in the slow cooker.

Where did grape jelly meatballs come from? ›

It's difficult to determine who was the first to create a recipe for grape jelly meatballs, much less document it. In the 1960s, recipes for “co*cktail meatballs” appeared in myriad texts, some of which were for a cream-based sauce (similar to Swedish meatballs), others made with ketchup and brown sugar.

What can I substitute for grape jelly meatballs? ›

Replace the Grape Jelly with apricot preserves, orange marmalade, canned cranberry sauce, raspberry preserves, or hot pepper jelly. Replace the Ketchup with Heinz chili sauce or barbecue sauce. If swapping the ketchup for chili sauce, it is not a spicy sauce.

What is the secret to firm meatballs? ›

Egg: Adds more moisture and helps the mixture firm up once cooked. Parmesan: My secret ingredient for the best meatballs! Parmigiano-Reggiano adds flavor and salt to our mixture.

What can I use to thicken meatballs? ›

Egg acts as a binder for the ingredients, but you only need a small amount. One small egg will do for one pound of minced meat. Alternatively, if you're following an egg-free diet, you could soak fresh bread in milk, squeezing out any excess milk, to use as a binder.

Why do my meatballs fall apart in the sauce? ›

Because meat shrinks when cooked, mince proteins are likely to separate and crumble unless bound together. Whether it's breadcrumbs or egg (or both), or simply salt, binding the mince is a crucial step in maintaining the softness of your meatballs while preventing them from falling apart.

Why is it called baby shower meatballs? ›

Why do people call them baby shower meatballs ?- Traditionally they are a staple dish served at baby showers.

What is the white stuff in grape jelly? ›

- Crystals can form as a result of excess sugar, undissolved sugar during cooking, or over or under cooking. Another source of crystals in grape jelly is tartrate crystals. Jelly that crystallizes in the refrigerator can be another problem.

Does grape jelly contain pork? ›

Pork isn't used directly to make jelly-based foods. Gelatin, a product made from the bones and skin of porcine and bovine products, is used, probably because it's cheap and there is a lot of it.

What is the difference between Welch's grape jelly and Welch's grape jam? ›

Welch's Jelly is made from fruit juice and Welch's Jam is made from pureed fruit. So to put it simply, though we use the same ingredients, the texture of both products will be different.

Is Concord grape jelly the same as regular grape jelly? ›

Welch's Natural Concord Grape Spread

And unlike most grape jelly, it isn't made with high fructose corn syrup. It's just concord grapes, sugar, lemon juice concentrate, and fruit pectin. Don't be turned off by the fact that it's a “spread” rather than a jelly—it's the consistency of jelly, I promise.

Is it better to use milk or water in meatballs? ›

Milk: We will mix a bit of milk with the breadcrumbs to form a panade, which will help to keep our meatballs nice and moist. Ground beef and pork: I like to use a 50/50 mix of the two to make meatballs, but you can also make all-beef or all-pork meatballs if you prefer.

Is it better to bake meatballs at 350 or 400? ›

For 1-2 inches of beef, pork, or turkey meatballs without any pre-cooking, use these guidelines for your wall oven:
  • 350°F wall oven:
  • 8–14 minutes for 1-inch meatballs.
  • 14–18 minutes for 2-inch meatballs.
  • 400°F wall oven:
  • 6–10 minutes for 1-inch meatballs.
  • 10–14 minutes for 2-inch meatballs.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Making Meatballs

  4. Not shaping the meatballs correctly.
  5. Not forming evenly-sized meatballs.

How do you add moisture to meatballs? ›

The Key to Tender Meatballs

Here, we're soaking fresh or dried breadcrumbs in a little milk until the bread becomes soggy, then mixing that right into the meat. This binder (aka panade) helps add moisture to the meatballs and also prevents the meat proteins from shrinking and becoming tough.

Why did my meatballs come out mushy? ›

Cook's Illustrated explains that adding too many eggs will put your meatballs at risk of having a soggy texture. Any additional and unnecessary liquid will also cause difficulty mixing and forming meatballs. Adding a single egg should be enough to do the trick, with two being the maximum for each pound of meat you use.

Why are my meatballs too firm? ›

More Reasons Your Meatballs are Hard

Sticky hands can result in an overworked farcemeat. Too much time spent forming the balls can also make them tough, and you're more likely to overwork them if you can't get them off your hands.

What happens when grape jelly goes bad? ›

Regardless of the type of jam or jelly you have on hand, it's important to know the signs of spoilage. According to Lee, this may include yeasty off-odors, fermented alcohol-like flavors, and mold growth, which may appear as white fuzzy patches inside the jar or on the product itself.
