Beautiful backstory episode. Reminded me of the first two episodes of Halo Legends a lot.

Just started a Matrix marathon, and I'm interjecting the Animatrix shorts for the most complete experience possible. Here is my viewing order:
From The Animatrix:
The Second Renaissance Part I
The Second Renaissance Part IIThe Matrix
From The Animatrix:
Kid's Story
The Final Flight Of The OsirisThe Matrix Reloaded
The Matrix RevolutionsFrom The Animatrix:
Program

A Detective Story
MatriculatedYou could make the case that A Detective Story takes place before The Matrix, but I prefer this viewing order. And it doesn't necessarily have to be. A review of The Second Renaissance will follow with Part II.

Review by Mr. DuLac ★★★★½ 1
This and Part II have always been, by far, my favorite of the Animatrix shorts.
Love the entire style and the narrative is disturbing in two folds because as grotesque humanity's behavior is lashing out at the AI/robots. you soon realize the film makers are just imitating moments in human history. Humanity has done these atrocities before and it was against itself.

Review by Siskoid ★★★★
Gorgeous modern anime, filled with detail, disturbing violence and special effects. There's no real reason to cut this in half except to balance a DVD menu, but I guess this is the human part of the Matrix secret origin. Basically, we did it to ourselves and I don't think the machines were wrong anymore.

Review by Blankments ★★★
An intriguing look at the rise of the machines where surprisingly they are the much more sympathetic characters. Cool animation to be sure, even though this is pure exposition.

history as we dont know it, repeating again.
the mistakes of man are clones of themselves in physical form and in action. -
Review by Edgar Cochran ✝️ ★★★★½
Both shorts combined are just amazing, apocalyptic, and very explanatory. They depict in a dark, violent and scandalous way our supremacy over the world that we once had, the rebellion of the machines and the extinction of the modern world as we know it. Some of the best short pieces of art I've ever seen.
Part I - 87/100.
